Welcome to the portfolio and research site of Sarai Silverman. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Design with focuses in Historical Costumes and Construction. I enjoy creating historically inspired clothing for everyday wear and recreating historical garments for plays and reenactment projects.
I first became interested in learning more about clothing construction while attending Collin County Community College and working as a seamstress in the Quad C Theater Costume Shop during my freshman year. Upon transferring to the University of Texas at Austin I decided to pursue Fashion Design and took as many classes as possible on historical costumes and clothing construction, even going to the theater department to take a class on fabric painting and dyeing.
While attending UT I became involved with the UT Madrigal Dinner Show, a Tudor inspired Dinner and Theater show that is produced by the Student Events Committee every fall semester. As head costume designer for 2005, 2006 and 2007 I have enjoyed not only designing and making the costumes, but teaching many cast and choir members to sew. Many pictures of the costumes from the show are on my website under the Theatrical heading.
My recent research projects can be found on this website under the Historical Reproductions heading. I will be posting new ones just as soon as they are finished, and am currently planning three projects for the coming year. Short descriptions are posted with each garment in the Historical section detailing the construction and sources used for the pattern creation.
You can also view images from my design collections as they are completed. I will post pictures of the garments from each collection, as well as flats, under the Collections heading.
Since graduation I have worked in the apparel industry trying to find a job as a designer and continuing my research into historical costumes. I am hoping to continue to add more costume research on this site, so check back for updates.
